SSEN Transmission has reaffirmed a major commitment to the energy workers of the future by pledging 600 ‘earn as you learn’ roles between now and 2030. The announcement, made at the SSE Training Centre in Perth, was welcomed by First Minister John Swinney as a vital step in supporting Scotland's green energy ambitions.

The company is currently undergoing an ambitious recruitment drive, having grown from 400 staff in 2019 to 2,500 today, and is committed to having 5% of its workforce in 'earn as you learn' roles at any time.

Workforce and Investment Details

The new positions will support early careers through ramped-up recruitment for:

• Trainee programmes, summer placements, and graduate schemes.

• Apprenticeships across disciplines, including aspiring engineers, environmental specialists, and planners.

These roles will be crucial in delivering SSEN Transmission's Pathway to 2030 programme, which involves investing at least £22 billion in the coming years. This investment includes the construction of new substations, subsea and underground cables, and overhead lines across the North of Scotland.

The positions will be based in regions at the heart of Scotland's renewable revolution, including Wick, Elgin, Shetland, and Aberdeenshire. The commitment also supports the organisation’s Just Transition strategy by creating reskilling opportunities for SSE's existing workforce and individuals from other sectors, such as oil and gas.
