A major renovation project is underway at Phyllis Jane Court on Drummond Drive, Wishaw, to deliver a comprehensive refurbishment of the retirement housing complex.
The €1.5 million project is being delivered by Clark Contracts on behalf of North Lanarkshire Council and is expected to be completed by summer 2026.
The refurbishment focuses on embracing dementia-friendly design principles to promote independent living and create a safer, more welcoming setting for residents.
Key construction and refurbishment elements include:
Internal Upgrades: Newly refurbished communal lounges, the addition of new quiet rooms for rest and reflection, and a new on-site hairdressing facility.
Safety & Accessibility: Installation of dementia-friendly wayfinding signage, new internal and external handrails, and energy-efficient lighting.
External Works: Creation of level access for all residents to maintain independence, and the addition of raised planters to encourage outdoor activities.
Amenities: Provision of dedicated parking for mobility scooters.
Housing Convener, Councillor Michael McPake, attended a sod-cutting event to mark the start of the works, emphasising that residents played a key role in shaping the plans: "This is an exciting refurbishment project that puts residents at the centre of ambitious plans to create a welcoming, safe, homely and warm environment.
"It's also pleasing to note that the new furniture is being delivered locally by NL Industries."
Gerry Cummins, Director at Clark Contracts, added: "We are pleased to be undertaking the project at Phyllis Jane Court on behalf of North Lanarkshire Council and look forward to seeing residents and visitors benefit from the enhanced facilities for many years to come."
