Highlands To Host North Sea Commission Transport Group Meeting

The Highlands region will next week host members of the North Sea Commission Transport Group.

The Council is hosting the meeting, which aims to strengthen partnerships between regional authorities across the North Sea Region (UK, EU, and Scandinavia) on shared challenges and opportunities.

As part of the visit, members will undertake a site visit to the Port of Nigg before gathering in Inverness for their main meeting on Thursday, 6 November, at The Highland Council headquarters.

Focus on Infrastructure and Green Freeport

The agenda for the meeting is focused on crucial topics relevant to construction and development, including secure and resilient infrastructure and ports.

Councillor Ken Gowans, Vice Chair of the Transport Group and Chair of the Council's Economy and Infrastructure Committee, said the group shares common goals to "improve reliance, connectivity and economic advantage." He welcomed the chance to highlight the investment and good practice underway in the Highlands.

The session will begin with a presentation of key projects in the Highlands, with a specific focus on the Inverness and Cromarty Firth Green Freeport.

Convener of the Council, Cllr Bill Lobban, added his support: "The Inverness and Cromarty Firth Green Freeport is set to be a key driver for economic growth so I am pleased it features on the agenda. By building resilient and thriving communities we will not only be encouraging people to live, work and prosper in the Highlands, but we will be securing the long-term prosperity of our region."

The meeting is seen as a chance to foster greater connectivity and cooperation with European colleagues on mutual interests and similar challenges.
