West Lothian Council has issued planning consent for the new railway station at Winchburgh.

This decision follows focused work by partners, including Winchburgh Developments Ltd, Transport Scotland, Network Rail, SEStran, and the Council, to progress the detailed business case.

The station, located adjacent to the new Winchburgh Town Centre, will feature platforms capable of accommodating six-carriage trains on the Edinburgh - Linlithgow - Glasgow / Stirling line. The consent also includes plans for a park and ride facility and electric vehicle charging points.

Executive councillor for Environment & Sustainability Tom Conn said: "It's extremely encouraging to see this project continuing to move forward at pace this year which reflects the positive collaboration between all parties. A station would bring lasting benefits to Winchburgh and surrounding communities - increasing sustainable travel options, supporting the local economy and connecting people to opportunities."

Next Step: Securing Construction Funding

While the outline business case, currently being reviewed by Transport Scotland, shows the station will have very positive benefits in terms of carbon reduction through a significant reduction in car-based journeys, a funding solution for its delivery remains to be confirmed.

The granting of planning consent now allows the Council and its partners to progress a funding bid to the Scottish Ministers. Partners are expected to finalise that bid next month.
