A significant construction milestone has been achieved at the Windy Standard III Wind Farm in Dumfries and Galloway with the first pouring of concrete for a turbine foundation.

Jones Bros Civil Engineering UK, the principal contractor for the multi-million-pound 20-turbine scheme, completed the 400m3 pour in approximately nine hours, keeping the project firmly on schedule.

The Fred. Olsen Renewables-led development, first consented in 2021, is designed to generate 87.6 megawatts of renewable energy, enough to power more than 130,000 UK homes annually.

Elliot Bidmead, project manager for Jones Bros, described the moment as a culmination of hard work.

"Reaching and completing the first foundation pour is always a significant milestone on our wind farm developments. It is the culmination of weeks of tireless work by our highly skilled and well-organised team," he said.

Jones Bros utilised its two on-site concrete batching plants to execute the large pour efficiently, a method which significantly reduces vehicle movements both offsite and onsite, helping to streamline delivery.

This foundation work follows the completion of ground investigation, access track construction, and associated crane hardstand construction. The 47-strong Jones Bros team, which includes apprentices, is now focused on constructing the remaining foundations, the control building, and carrying out cabling works.

Garod Evans, Jones Bros contracts director, noted that this landmark showcases the firm"s experience in the sector. "It's a key landmark in the delivery of what is another sizeable renewable energy scheme in Scotland," he stated.

Turbine deliveries are due to start in April 2026, with the first power generation from the south west Scotland wind farm expected in winter 2026.
