Angus Council has officially moved forward with plans to enhance the protection of Brechin by appointing the environmental and engineering firm, JBA Consulting, to develop designs for an uplift of the town's existing Flood Protection Scheme.
The primary focus of the project is to increase the height of the current flood defences.
The consulting team has already commenced work in the River Street area. Initial site assessments recently involved a high-tech drone flight survey, which captured extensive photography. This data will be used to generate a detailed 3D model of the area, which is vital for the precise measurement and hydrological modelling required for the new designs. Furthermore, a Preliminary Ecological Survey is also currently underway across the affected area.
The Council is stressing the importance of continued community engagement throughout the design phase. JBA Consulting will work in close association with the Council's established Communities Team to maintain outreach via several channels, including direct emails, drop-in sessions, social media updates, and online meetings. Local residents and businesses can also subscribe for news and updates via the Engage Angus web pages.
Initial engagement on the proposed design options for raising the existing scheme is anticipated to begin in December. Full details regarding these community consultations will be confirmed by the Council shortly.
The design work was made possible after elected members approved the allocation of £100,000 in June from the Year 4 UK Shared Prosperity Fund 2025/26. The Council's Director of Infrastructure and Environment will deliver reports detailing the progress of the design work and the outcome of the community feedback to the Communities Committee.
