Perth-headquartered SSEN Transmission is celebrating after two of its early careers employees, Angus Morrison and Arpan Jana, were shortlisted as finalists for the Energy UK Young Energy Professionals (YEP) Awards. The awards ceremony will take place in London on Thursday, 6 November 2025.
The YEP Awards celebrate rising stars with less than 10 years' experience in the energy sector.
Angus Morrison, a Trainee Site Construction Manager, is nominated for the Audrey Gallacher Award for Excellence. He is recognised for his work on an innovative peat restoration project at the Craig Murrail substation in Argyll.
The project involves creating watertight cells to raise the natural water table, allowing the excavated peat to regenerate. This process prevents carbon loss to the atmosphere and, over time, is expected to form a carbon sink.
Angus, who documented the process using drone footage to develop key recommendations, said he was "genuinely surprised" by the nomination, noting that the award celebrates those "new to the industry, which I am."
Arpan Jana, an Assistant Power Systems Engineer at The National HVDC Centre, has been shortlisted in the Rising Star category.
Arpan is recognised for his crucial contributions to the Network DC project, a nationally significant initiative funded by Ofgem. The project aims to enable multi-terminal High-Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) networks by integrating new DC circuit breaker technology. This work uses real-time simulation to reduce risks and enhance grid resilience, which is vital for supporting large-scale offshore renewable energy projects.
Arpan said it felt "incredibly rewarding" to be shortlisted alongside so many talented individuals, adding that it was "motivating to see early-career contributions recognised at the national level."
Jenna McDonald, Early Career and Pipelines Manager at SSEN Transmission, commented that the nominations reflect the employees' "valuable contributions to projects that are central to upgrading the grid," calling the work an "exciting time to start a career in energy."
