Proposals have been unveiled for a new residential-led development on the site of the existing JTC Furniture factory—the former Timex factory—on Harrison Road in Dundee's Camperdown area.
The development, which will include affordable homes, local shops, and business units, is financially essential for funding the relocation of JTC's long-standing manufacturing operations to a new modern site at the Dunsinane Industrial Estate.
JTC Furniture, founded in Dundee in 1986, is a leading UK manufacturer of fitted furniture, currently supplying more than a quarter of the Scottish social housing market.
The company, which was acquired by Northern Ireland-based Woodland Kitchens in April 2024, employs around 200 staff in Dundee. The management determined that the current Camperdown site was outdated, highly energy-intensive, and no longer fit for purpose.
While relocating to Woodland's headquarters in Northern Ireland was considered, the company chose to remain in the city to retain its skilled local workforce. The plan is to increase the Dundee workforce by 20% to approximately 240 staff in the coming years.
A spokesperson for JTC Furniture said the proposals for the new housing are a "win-win for Dundee," helping to tackle the housing emergency while securing the future of their local manufacturing base.
The move will allow JTC to operate from a modern, energy-efficient facility, which is expected to significantly reduce the environmental impact of production compared to the current ageing site, aligning with the wider sustainability commitments of the Woodland Furniture Group.
The heritage of the former Timex site will be acknowledged through public artwork, delivered in consultation with the local community.
A pre-application consultation process is now underway, with public consultation events scheduled at the Dunsinane Industrial Estate from 2pm–7pm on Tuesday, 28 October, and Tuesday, 25 November. A Planning Permission in Principle (PPiP) application is expected to be submitted in January 2026.
