Overnight works to renew the road surface on two sections of the A720 Edinburgh City Bypass are set to begin on Thursday, 23 October 2025, and will continue on Monday to Friday nights until Monday, 17 November 2025.

Transport Scotland's operating company, BEAR Scotland, will carry out the works between 8.30pm and 6am each night, necessitating carriageway closures for safety.

The works will be phased as follows:

Phase 1: Hermiston Gait to Baberton (Eastbound)

On the nights of Thursday, 23 October 2025, Friday, 24 October 2025, and Monday, 27 October 2025, the eastbound carriageway will be closed between Hermiston Gait and Baberton Junctions.

• Diversion: Traffic will be signposted via Calder Junction, the A71 (Calder Road), and the B701 (Wester Hailes Road) to Clovenstone Roundabout, rejoining the A720 at Baberton Junction.

• Estimated Delay: This diversion will add an estimated 1.9 miles and 7 minutes to affected journeys.

Phase 2: Straiton to Lothianburn (Westbound)

On Monday to Friday nights from Tuesday, 28 October 2025, to Monday, 17 November 2025, the westbound carriageway will be closed between Straiton and Lothianburn Junctions.

• Diversion: Traffic will be signposted via the A701 (Burdiehouse Road), the B701 (Frogston Road), and the A702 (Biggar Road) before rejoining the A720 at Lothianburn Junction.

• Estimated Delay: This diversion will add an estimated 1.2 miles and 6 minutes to affected journeys.

Tommy Deans, BEAR Scotland's South East Network Manager, said the surfacing improvements will "address and repair defects in the road surface such as potholes and cracks, ensuring the continued safe and reliable operation of the city bypass."
