The joint venture between National Grid Electricity Transmission and SSEN Transmission has named NKT as the preferred bidder to deliver the high-voltage direct current (HVDC) cable system for the Eastern Green Link 3 (EGL3) project.

EGL3 is one of the largest electricity transmission projects in the UK, providing a 2GW subsea link between Aberdeenshire and Norfolk. The 525kV HVDC cable system will transmit enough clean power to supply around two million homes, strengthening the UK's energy security and helping to deliver clean energy targets.

The 680km cable route will run between Longside in Aberdeenshire and Walpole in Norfolk, using a combination of subsea and underground cables. NKT's preferred bidder status follows a competitive procurement process, and the company will now supply and install the critical cable system.

James Johnson, Deputy Project Director for Eastern Green Link 3 at SSEN Transmission, said the project would be "vital in unlocking Scotland's vast renewable energy resources, ensuring they can reach homes and businesses across Great Britain."

Subject to approval from the Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, construction is scheduled to begin in 2028, with the link expected to be operational by 2033.
