Clark Contracts has completed the deep retrofit of Scotland's National Retrofit Centre (SNRC), a project that was part-funded with a £1.2 million grant through Scotland's Public Sector Heat Decarbonisation Fund.

The upgrade work, delivered by the main contractor, was a central element of the official relaunch of BE-ST's Innovation Campus in Hamilton earlier this month.

The newly retrofitted SNRC is now a hub for developing retrofit skills and knowledge, providing a space for hands-on training and the demonstration of retrofit technologies to help decarbonise the UK's existing buildings.

Gerry Cummins, Director of Clark Contracts, expressed delight in having delivered the retrofit, stating it "demonstrates what is possible when heritage and innovation come together."

The relaunch event also celebrated the opening of the new Mass Timber Centre of Excellence at the campus. Supported by Edinburgh Napier University, the centre now houses £1.5m of new timber processing equipment, which includes the largest commercially available CNC machine in the UK. The facility aims to strengthen local supply chains by onshoring the production of mass timber products to Scotland.

Stephen Good, CEO of BE-ST, said the two new facilities were designed to give the construction sector the tools and expertise to overcome barriers and respond to key challenges, including skills gaps and housing and climate crises.
