Construction has begun on 17 new council homes on Barrhead Road in Newton Mearns, East Renfrewshire.

The homes, which are being built by CCG Scotland Ltd, are part of a project that was brought forward to help tackle the local housing emergency declared in 2024.

The development represents an investment of more than £4.3 million, with £1.9 million in funding from the Scottish Government, as well as developer contributions and the council's own capital investment. The homes will comprise four one-bed cottage flats, twelve two-bed flats, and one two-bed bungalow. Three of the homes will be wheelchair adaptable.

The new homes have been designed to be highly energy efficient, with high levels of insulation, zero-emission Air Source Heat Pumps, and solar panels to help lower running costs for tenants.

Housing and Environment Convener, Councillor Danny Devlin, said he was "delighted" to provide people with these "high-quality homes." Council Leader Owen O'Donnell added that the development reflects the council's "ongoing commitment to local residents."

A spokesperson for CCG (Scotland) said they were "delighted to have made our return to East Renfrewshire" and noted that the project will also bring community benefits, including jobs, work placements for young people, and career-based engagement with local schools.

Construction is set to complete by autumn 2026.
