The UK's largest independent bus company, McGill's Group, has unveiled plans for a new £25 million depot in Glasgow that could create up to 850 jobs.
The project follows the company’s recent purchase of a 6.55-acre brownfield site on Kilbirnie Street in Tradeston, just 1.5 miles from the city centre.
The new facility will provide a modern, strategically located hub for the company's continued expansion and will support the further growth of its coach fleet to 300 vehicles. According to co-owner Sandy Easdale, the project is not just about the company's growth but also about "driving further regeneration in this part of the city." He added that Tradeston is the "ideal location" due to its superb motorway and public transport links.
The new depot is a key part of the company's three-year plan to "revolutionise public transport in Scotland." The company has also established itself as a leader in decarbonisation, having invested £95 million over the past five years in 151 zero-emission buses and associated infrastructure. This gives McGill's the highest share of electric buses in Scotland and places the Group among the top three operators for fleet decarbonisation in the UK.
Owned by Scottish entrepreneurs Sandy and James Easdale, the company has seen rapid growth in recent years, with operations expanding to Dundee, Stirling, Falkirk, Edinburgh, Livingston, Aberdeen, and Inverness. Co-owner James Easdale said the ambition for McGill’s is to "deliver sustainable, high-quality transport while building a business that supports communities and creates long-term employment."
