Almost £770,000 In Regeneration Funding Sutherland Communities

Local communities across Sutherland are set to benefit from a significant investment of £767,940.11 after The Highland Council's Sutherland Area Committee approved funding allocations from the Community Regeneration Fund (CRF).

The total amount was awarded from the £1.09 million available to the area for 2025/26, with the funding aimed at strengthening local communities, tackling depopulation, and supporting sustainable economic recovery.

The approved funds will support a wide range of initiatives, from cultural heritage to vital building upgrades. The Clyne Heritage Society received £100,000 for the completion of Brora Heritage Centre, which will include digital storytelling and community workshop spaces. Major upgrades are also planned for the Ardgay Public Hall with an allocation of £85,353.83 to improve its roof, fascia, soffits, and guttering.

Several projects received funding to enhance energy efficiency and sustainability. The Durness Parish Hall Trustees will replace their heating system with a ground source heat pump with an award of £23,500.61, while the Elphin, Ledmore and Knockan Community Association received £3,458.77 for infrared panel heaters. The Go Golspie Development Trust was awarded £55,790 for the installation of solar panels and battery storage. In addition, the Highland Council will use its £48,134 allocation to create new visitor facilities at Ardvreck Castle.

Addressing the local housing need and supporting rural repopulation, a total of £100,000 was awarded to the Communities Housing Trust for the development of two affordable homes at Borgie. The Scourie Community Development Company received £70,245.70 to improve parking and access, allowing for the future development of nine affordable homes.

In a separate allocation, members also agreed to award £250 thousand towards a Development Officer Support Scheme. This will enable community trusts and development companies across Sutherland to bid for support to deliver on the Area Place Plan.

The Community Regeneration Fund combines the Highland Coastal Communities Fund and the Place Based Investment Programme, both funded by The Scottish Government to support regeneration and sustainable development across the Highlands.

Councillor Richard Gale, Chair of the Sutherland County Committee, said: "This is a significant investment in our communities. The range of projects we have approved reflects the energy and ambition of local groups in Sutherland – from heritage and tourism to community halls, and housing. Together, these projects will strengthen resilience, support sustainability, and improve the quality of life for residents and visitors alike."
