An East Lothian engineering company, Had-Fab, has secured a contract worth more than £100 million to fabricate nearly 500 steel towers for SSEN Transmission's Spittal – Loch Buidhe – Beauly 400kV overhead line project.

The deal, which is the largest in the firm's history, will create an additional 70 jobs directly and help to increase its overall workforce to more than 250 people within the next year.

Had-Fab has been a long-standing partner of SSEN Transmission, providing steel and aluminium for several other projects. This new work is being delivered under Ofgem's Accelerated Strategic Transmission Investment (ASTI) framework and will see the company fabricate 28,000 tonnes of steelwork over the next three years.

The Scottish Secretary, Ian Murray MP, and the Scottish Energy Secretary, Gillian Martin MSP, both welcomed the investment, highlighting its importance for Scotland's green energy targets and the creation of skilled jobs. The Managing Director of SSEN Transmission, Rob McDonald, said the deal demonstrates the "major economic opportunities" generated by upgrading the electricity grid. The project is a collaboration between Had-Fab, SSEN Transmission, Murphy, and Wood Transmission and Distribution Ltd.
