Glasgow City Council has approved the disposal of two sites in the East End to pave the way for new housing developments, including homes for social and mid-market rent.

The former Newlands Centre in Parkhead and land at Easterhill Street in Tollcross will be sold to developers as part of the council's efforts to transform unused property into homes.

Following a committee decision, the council will now enter negotiations with Wheatley Homes for the sale of the former Newlands Centre at 871 Springfield Road. The traditional three-storey sandstone building, once a parish school, has been vacant since being declared surplus to requirements in October 2024. Most recently, it housed offices for the Health and Social Care Partnership.

Pending successful negotiations, Wheatley Homes plans to convert the building into flats for social rent, supporting Glasgow’s wider housing strategy.

The committee has also approved the sale of two vacant plots of land on Easterhill Street in Tollcross to New City Vision Limited. Measuring a total of 0.7 hectares and covered in natural shrubbery and trees, the land sits next to another vacant site under private ownership.

New City Vision intends to acquire both sites to develop 90 homes for mid-market rent. The sale will generate £350,000 for the council.

Councillor Ruairi Kelly, Convener for Housing, Development, Built Heritage and Land Use at Glasgow City Council, said: "These disposals continue the ongoing and successful process in Glasgow of converting unproductive buildings and land into new purposes, in these cases new and much-needed homes in Glasgow's East End. These new homes will meet the needs of people and families as well as generating very welcome receipts for the public purse that will be reinvested into council services."
