Building on the success of the Borders Railway to Tweedbank, Turner & Townsend has been appointed by Scottish Borders Council to lead the business case and feasibility work for a further extension to Hawick and Carlisle.

The appointment will enable feasibility studies and economic impact analysis for the railway extension, assessing its benefits and challenges for the Borderlands areas.

The project follows the UK and Scottish Governments' confirmation of up to £10 million in funding through the Borderlands Inclusive Growth Deal. The initial contract is for two years, pending successful progression through gateways. An extension is expected to significantly benefit the local community and wider region by supporting economic growth, enhancing tourism, and improving connectivity for residents.
