Pat Munro To Commence Cooper Park Investigation Works

Construction News Image
Moray Council has awarded a contract to Pat Munro (Alness) Ltd to undertake essential drainage investigation works within Cooper Park pond in Elgin. These crucial works are scheduled to commence on Monday, 7 July 2025, and are expected to last approximately two weeks.

The investigation will involve the use of specialist cameras to inspect the pond's drainage pipes and chambers, which are vital for managing water flow. These pipes will be thoroughly cleaned to remove blockages and ensure unimpeded water movement. The drainage system extends under the A941 and connects to the River Lossie to the west.

To gain a deeper understanding of the pond's structure, Pat Munro will also excavate two small exploratory holes, known as trial pits, within the pond area. These pits will help identify the lining beneath the water and its depth. One trial pit will be located next to a damaged section of the pond wall, which will be carefully disassembled for inspection. It will then be repaired and replaced once the investigation is complete.

These initial investigation works form a critical part of a broader programme of improvements in and around Elgin town centre, delivered through investment from the UK Government's Levelling Up Fund (LUF). The project aims to enhance the park's infrastructure to support future redevelopment plans.

Councillor Marc Macrae, Chair of Moray Council's Economic Development and Infrastructure Services Committee, welcomed the progress: "This is another welcome step forward in the delivery of improvements at Cooper Park as part of our Levelling Up Fund investment. These initial investigations are vital to inform the wider redevelopment plans and ensure we build on solid foundations, both literally and figuratively. The work is also in addition to the algae issues being dealt with, as reported earlier in the week. Thank you to everyone for their patience and understanding while these essential works take place to support the long-term improvement of Cooper Park. I look forward to seeing further progress over the coming months as this much-loved park evolves to better serve our community and visitors alike.”

Further updates on the wider redevelopment programme are anticipated, with resurfacing work on the footpath leading to the pavilion expected to start in August 2025.
