SSEN Transmission has announced a new strategic partnership with Powering Futures, a pioneering education-to-workforce skills provider, to inspire and equip the next generation for careers within Scotland's energy sector.
This collaboration underscores SSEN Transmission's commitment to building a workforce capable of meeting the demands of an evolving energy landscape.
Powering Futures' flagship Challenge Programme, now in its fourth year, connects school pupils with businesses through hands-on learning. Participants work on industry-set sustainability challenges, developing skills in innovation, problem-solving, networking, and sustainability. The programme is currently embedded in over 125 schools across Scotland, with over 3,500 pupils this year working towards earning an SCQF level 6 qualification, equivalent to a Higher.
This new strategic partnership will further integrate industry into the educational framework, creating a direct pipeline of talent into businesses crucial for delivering the transition to net zero. SSEN Transmission volunteers will support classrooms undertaking the Powering Futures Challenge Programme, helping students explore diverse career pathways in Scotland's rapidly expanding energy sector.
SSEN Transmission anticipates supporting up to 37,000 jobs in the coming years, with hundreds of diverse roles emerging within the business. Raising awareness of these opportunities, particularly in northern communities where much of the company's work will be undertaken, is vital to ensuring local talent contributes to the UK's net zero journey.
Steph O'Donnell, Strategic Workforce Planning Manager at SSEN Transmission, commented: "As we deliver the infrastructure needed for a net zero future, it's vital that we also invest in the people who will build, operate and lead that future. Powering Futures offers young people a real window into the opportunities in our sector, and gives them a platform to see how they can be part of something that truly matters. This programme is a fantastic way to connect with young people in the communities where we live and work. Whether it's engineering, project management, environmental planning or digital innovation, the energy sector needs a wide range of skills - and we want to show students that there's a place for them in it."
Jennifer Tempany, Co-Founder of Powering Futures, added: "We're thrilled to have SSEN Transmission on board. As an organisation at the forefront of the UK's net zero transition, their support reinforces the importance of preparing young people with the skills and experiences needed to thrive in the energy sector - a major growth area for Scotland. Together, we're not just inspiring future careers, but we're also helping to build the workforce that will deliver a more sustainable future."
