Midlothian Council has confirmed the appointment of Kier to deliver the new £41.8 million Mayfield Community Learning Campus. Work on the significant development is scheduled to commence this summer, marking a major investment in the area's educational and community infrastructure.

Kier's role will involve the demolition of existing buildings and the subsequent construction of a contemporary campus designed to serve a wide range of needs. The new facility will bring together Mayfield Primary School and St Luke’s RC Primary School, alongside early years provision and specialist education for children with additional support needs, all within a single, integrated building.

Beyond its core educational purpose, the campus will offer a variety of community amenities. These include a seven-a-side grass football pitch, a full-sized 3G football pitch, a basketball court, and dedicated community growing spaces. Inside, the plans incorporate modern meeting rooms, flexible workspaces, and a new library. Upon completion, the campus will provide learning environments for over 700 primary school pupils, 100 nursery-aged children, and 24 children with additional support needs, reflecting a commitment to inclusive and high-quality learning.

Phil McDowell, regional director for Kier Construction North & Scotland, expressed the company's satisfaction with the contract. He stated: "We’re pleased to be working once again with Midlothian Council to deliver the new Mayfield Community Learning Campus. Drawing on our strong track record in building high-quality schools, we’ll create a modern, inclusive environment for over 700 pupils complete with a wide range of community uses."

McDowell also detailed the project's approach to local impact: "This project marks a major step forward for Mayfield. We’ve also developed a careful site preparation strategy to minimise disruption to nearby residents, reusing materials on site to reduce waste and traffic coming in and out of the site. The end result will be a valuable resource for learning, wellbeing and community life for years to come."

Councillor Ellen Scott, Midlothian Council’s Cabinet Member for Education, highlighted the broader benefits for the community. She commented: "While the schools will be the heart of this project, our aim is to build an outstanding facility that will also serve the wider community. This is a significant and timely investment in the future of the Mayfield community. We’re looking forward to welcoming local people and children into a well-designed, modern and inspiring building that responds to the needs of young learners while expanding opportunities for improved health, wellbeing and the local economy."

The project forms part of the Scottish Government’s Learning Estate Investment Programme and benefits from direct funding from the government.
