Redevelopment Begins On Westhaugh Travelling Persons Site

Construction News Image
Redevelopment works have officially begun onsite at the travelling persons site at Westhaugh, near Alva. This significant project, with a revised budget of £5.5 million, aims to transform the facility into a modern, energy-efficient site that meets the cultural needs of its residents. The site is expected to be re-opened for residents during May 2026.

The comprehensive work includes the demolition of existing structures and the construction of new accommodation capable of housing up to 16 households. The updated site will also feature safe storage for gas, improved landscaping and pitch layouts, new chemical toilet disposal facilities, and a safe and secure playground area for children.

Councillor Jane McTaggart, Depute Spokesperson for Place, expressed her satisfaction at the commencement of works: "I am very pleased that work is beginning onsite to deliver this important Council project. Plans for this much improved site have been developed alongside the Gypsy Traveller community, and will meet their needs providing modern, efficient and attractive facilities for all residents."

Councillor McTaggart also acknowledged the community’s patience during previous setbacks. "I am grateful for the understanding of the Westhaugh community during the unavoidable delays to this project, and I pleased that the time when the families can all be together again is within sight."

The project experienced a pause last year when the original building contractor appointed by Hubco East Central Scotland went into administration. A new contract for the completion of the works was subsequently agreed, with Ogilvie appointed as the new contractor. This new phase ensures the project is back on track to deliver much-needed modern facilities for the Westhaugh community.
