St Margaret's Academy in Livingston is celebrating a significant victory, having been crowned champions in this year's Mitsubishi Electric 'Pump It Up!' Challenge.
The competition saw over 850 third-year pupils from nine West Lothian secondary schools tasked with devising innovative methods of using heat pumps to combat environmental issues, demonstrating a strong understanding of sustainable energy principles.
The 'Pump It Up!' Challenge is a collaborative venture between Livingston-based Mitsubishi Electric Air Conditioning Systems Europe and West Lothian Chamber of Commerce, designed to foster closer ties between industry and schools and ignite interest in engineering careers. Engineers from Mitsubishi Electric visited participating schools to select one team from each to advance to the final.
St Margaret's Academy emerged victorious in the final, held at Howden Park Centre, with their vibrant and detailed presentation titled 'Warm Workplace, Cold Computers'. Their winning concept demonstrated how a heat pump could convert wasted heat from a computer server into energy, which was then transformed into electricity.
Second place was awarded to Broxburn Academy, who impressed judges by showing how green energy could create a habitable environment in a desert. Their pupils explained how a heat pump could cool air, allowing water vapour to condense and be reused to create conditions suitable for plants to thrive. Winchburgh Academy secured third place with their innovative idea of using wind power, combined with piezoelectric plates, solar panels, and a heat pump, to power a fan generator to help people dry off after a wet funfair ride.
The finalists presented their ideas to an invited audience comprising representatives from the local authority, education, and business sectors, as well as family members and teachers. Notable attendees included Mr Hattori, President of Mitsubishi Electric Livingston, and Mr Takeda, Consul General of Japan in Edinburgh.
Now in its eighth year, the 'Pump It Up!' Challenge aims to spark an interest in engineering among young people, while also supporting them in developing crucial skills beneficial for their future career choices.
Dr Elaine Cook, West Lothian Council's Deputy Chief Executive, commented: "The Pump It Up challenge gives the students a platform to showcase their skills, innovation and enthusiasm in collaboration with our business community."
Mr Takeda, Consul General of Japan in Edinburgh, added: "I was honoured to attend the event which for many years has helped promote engineering and ingenuity amongst the young people of West Lothian. It also contributes to Scotland and Japan's co-operation in moving forward to a more green energy world."
