SSEN Transmission, a key player in Scotland's energy infrastructure, has announced a significant milestone in its innovation efforts, now operating the largest Dynamic Line Rating (DLR) network in the UK.
This cutting-edge, infrastructure-monitoring technology is set to dramatically increase wind power transmission capacity and enhance the overall efficiency of the GB electricity grid, ultimately benefiting consumers.
Over the past few months, SSEN Transmission has installed DLR technology across more than 300 kilometres of overhead transmission lines as part of its 'North of Beauly DLR project'. The system is expected to be fully operational by the end of 2025.
DLR utilises real-time environmental data, including temperature, wind speed, solar radiation, and cloud cover, to accurately calculate the live capacity of overhead lines. This represents a significant advancement over traditional static line ratings, which are fixed conservative figures that often lead to unused capacity. With DLR, higher winds cool the lines, safely enabling greater power voltages to flow through the network.
The system works by sensors transmitting live conductor temperatures to cloud-based algorithms. These algorithms then calculate real-time and forecasted ratings, which are relayed to the National Energy System Operator (NESO). NESO integrates this data into its decision-making process for balancing generation and managing potential constraints on the network.
While large-scale network reinforcement projects remain crucial for increasing capacity, DLR provides a vital boost to the existing grid. By working in tandem with reinforcement, it maximises efficiency across the network and can ultimately save energy consumers money by alleviating constraints.
Brant Wilson, SSEN Transmission’s Innovation Portfolio Manager, commented: “Operating the UK’s largest dynamic line rating network is a major milestone for us here at SSEN Transmission. It demonstrates our commitment to innovation and unlocking every ounce of capacity from the existing network to accelerate the transition to net zero."
He added: "By making smarter use of the grid, we’re enabling more renewable electricity to flow from where it is generated to where it will be used – and alleviating constraint on the network at the same time too."
With all sensors now installed, SSEN Transmission will conduct a rigorous period of calibration and monitoring over the coming months. Following this, SSEN Transmission and NESO will collaborate on communication testing, aiming for the system's full roll-out by the end of the year. The company is also actively exploring options for installing more DLR technology across its operational region in Scotland.
