Network Rail is set to begin a crucial £2 million vegetation management project along the railway line between Wemyss Bay and Inverkip.
The extensive programme involves clearing overgrown trees and plants to mitigate safety risks to trains and passengers, and ensure the continued reliability of services.
The first phase of the works is scheduled to commence on Sunday, 6 July 2025, and is expected to conclude in August. Subsequent phases will address stretches from Inverkip to Branchton, Branchton to Whinhill, and ultimately Whinhill to Port Glasgow. The entire project, vital for maintaining Scotland's railway infrastructure, is anticipated to be completed by April 2026.
Network Rail explained that overhanging branches and dense greenery near the railway pose significant safety concerns, including the potential for falling onto tracks, obstructing signals, or damaging overhead power lines. Specialist teams conduct thorough assessments to identify and manage vegetation that could become hazardous.
Gemma Dallas, Scheme Project Manager at Network Rail Scotland, commented on the careful planning involved: "Managing the trees and plants along the railway between Wemyss Bay and Inverkip is vital to keeping services running reliably and ensuring the line remains safe for everyone who uses it. This stretch of railway runs through a scenic and well-loved part of the west coast, so we’ve planned the work carefully to balance the need for maintenance while caring for the local environment and habitats."
Acknowledging the potential for disruption, Ms Dallas added: "Some of the work needs to be carried out at night to protect our teams and avoid disruption to daytime train services. We’d like to apologise in advance for any disturbance and are grateful to the local community for their patience and support while we carry out this important work."
