SP Energy Networks is rolling out advanced technology to ensure Glasgow's electricity system is ready to support athletes, officials and visitors during Glasgow 2026.
As part of a major resilience programme, the network operator has been testing Power Survey's state-of-the-art Mobile Asset Assessment Vehicle (MAAV) on routes across Glasgow. The approach is designed to spot potential problems in underground infrastructure that are not apparent through routine visual checks.
Developed by Osmose Utilities Services, Inc., the Power Survey™ system equips a specialist vehicle with highly sensitive electric scanning to detect underground voltage that may signal emerging issues. With real-time data and detailed diagnostics, engineers can pinpoint and fix faults before they impact customers.
The trial is a key element of SP Energy Networks' preparations for Glasgow 2026, aimed at keeping the city's electricity infrastructure performing at its best during one of the year's biggest sporting occasions.
Glasgow's network spans more than 8,000 kilometres of overhead lines and underground cables and nearly 4,000 substations. Maintaining the reliability of these assets is a priority as the city gears up to host thousands of competitors, support teams and spectators.

Beyond the Power Survey deployment, SP Energy Networks is stepping up preparations by installing additional monitoring equipment, expanding automated controls, using thermal imaging to assess assets and increasing the number of engineers on standby.
Together, these measures are intended to keep the electricity network operating at optimal levels for Glasgow 2026 and to deliver lasting benefits for customers and communities across the wider Glasgow area.
