Network Rail To Begin Vital Tree Management Work On West Highland Line

Construction News Image
Network Rail is preparing to begin a major programme of tree and vegetation management along one of Scotland's most iconic rail routes, the West Highland Line, with the added benefit of enhancing the already breathtaking views for passengers.

Starting Monday, 30 June, the work will take place between the Falls of Falloch and just beyond Crianlarich Station, spanning the River Fillan. Vegetation will be cleared up to six metres on either side of the railway tracks, within the railway boundary. In addition, hazardous growth encroaching on the line will be addressed where necessary.

Train services on the West Highland Line will not be impacted by the works, which will be carried out during daytime hours only. This phase of the project is expected to continue into the winter months.

Gemma Dallas, Scheme Project Manager at Network Rail, said: "We know how popular the West Highland Line is with our neighbours and tourists visiting Scotland, and this work will respect and enhance the views across one of the world’s most scenic rail routes.

"We manage thousands of miles of trees and vegetation along the railway to ensure that everything which grows lineside is safe and does not cause delays to trains. We want to apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused by the work.

Through the management of lineside trees and vegetation, we aim to protect the safety of the operational railway line. This keeps passengers safe and reduces risks for lineside neighbours."

Before the start of work, ecological surveys were carried out to identify nesting birds, protected species, and sensitive habitats. These safeguards will remain in place throughout the operation, with specialist ecologists continuing to monitor the environment. Where possible, biodiversity improvements will be introduced, such as bat and bird boxes and habitat piles. A full habitat risk assessment has been completed in consultation with NatureScot.

Residents living closest to the railway will receive written notifications about the work, which will include a frequently asked questions section. Additionally, a community drop-in event is scheduled for Tuesday, 24 June at Crianlarich Village Hall from 4pm to 7pm. All are welcome to attend and learn more about the project.
