Fife Council has approved a major change to its housing allocations policy, allowing single applicants to be considered for two-bedroom properties for the first time.

The decision, made by the Cabinet Committee in April, was based on a key recommendation from a cross-party and partnership-led working group. The group was formed to review housing allocations in light of mounting pressures linked to Fife’s declared housing emergency.

The change is aimed at addressing a growing disconnect between the types of properties becoming available and the needs of applicants on the Fife Housing Register, particularly those with priority status or urgent rehousing requirements. Council officers are now in the process of putting the new policy into effect.

John Mills, head of housing at Fife Council, said: "This new approach should improve outcomes for individuals and families, especially those with shared care responsibilities, access arrangements for children, or specific health and caring needs. We recognise that some households may need additional support when moving into a larger home, and we are committed to providing that where necessary."
