AS Homes and Barrhead Housing To Deliver 12 New Social Homes

Construction News Image
AS Homes (Scotland) has secured planning permission from East Renfrewshire Council for a new social housing development in partnership with Barrhead Housing.

The project will see 12 new flats built for social rent on Cross Arthurlie Street, a brownfield site near Barrhead Park and the town's train station. The development will consist of a four-storey block, a private residential parking court to the rear, and landscaped communal areas.

The scheme continues a longstanding collaboration between the family-run housebuilder and Barrhead Housing. It also marks an early step in the housing association’s 2030 strategy, Build homes, grow communities, delight customers, which includes a £7.5 million investment and a target of delivering 336 new homes.

Paul Kelly, Managing Director of AS Homes, said: "The introduction of 12 new social flats on this site will provide much needed high-quality housing in an area of demand. At AS Homes, we prioritise the use of brownfield sites where possible and focus on underutilised, high-need areas for regeneration which is exactly the case with this development. It's great to partner with Barrhead Housing once again to contribute to our shared mission and benefit the local community."

The initiative also aligns with a recently signed Strategic Agreement between Barrhead Housing and East Renfrewshire Council aimed at expanding affordable housing options in the area.

Lorna Wilson, Chief Executive of Barrhead Housing, said: "We are committed to playing our part in tackling Scotland’s housing crisis. We’re proud to continue our partnership with AS Homes, delivering high-quality, affordable homes for the community of Barrhead.

"This development of high-quality, energy-efficient affordable homes represents an early milestone in the Strategic Agreement we signed recently with East Renfrewshire Council. That agreement will result in us adding more than 200 homes over the next five years to the 1000 we currently own and manage."

Construction is expected to begin in summer 2025.
