Glasgow City Council has developed a pipeline of potential projects for four city neighbourhoods, aiming to create more walkable, wheelable, and cyclable environments where residents' daily needs can be met within a short distance of their homes. These initiatives, shaped by extensive community input, are part of the city's broader Liveable Neighbourhoods program.
The detailed plans for Cardonald to Mosspark, Knightswood to Anniesland, Lambhill to Milton, and Ruchazie to Easterhouse, outline proposed changes to rebalance street design, foster social interaction, and boost local commercial activity, while encouraging active and sustainable transport for everyday journeys. Following previous and recent community engagement, the potential projects in these four neighbourhoods have now advanced to concept design.
While securing new funding is essential for further progression, this preliminary development work is crucial for demonstrating project viability and strengthening future funding bids.
Developed designs include:
• Cardonald to Mosspark: Enhanced public spaces and improved active travel options along Paisley Road West benefiting Halfway, Craigton, Penilee, and Rosshall. Proposals for Bellahouston aim to address the M8 motorway barrier and create better connections to northern communities and services.
• Knightswood to Anniesland: Formation of a Kelso Street Green Corridor to add greenspace and enhance connectivity, and the Netherton and Temple Green Routes project to redevelop community facilities and improve area connectivity.
• Lambhill to Milton: The 'Heart of Milton' initiative seeks to revitalise Liddesdale Square through enhanced sustainable and active transport links, identified as a key local priority. Additional proposals include safer junctions along Castlebay Street and an off-road active travel route west of Castlebay Road for accessible school routes.
• Ruchazie to Easterhouse: Proposals include a new civic heart for Ruchazie, a vibrant school street for Lochend Community Campus, and a Green Corridor in Gartloch to enhance connectivity between Craigend, GESH, the Fort, and surrounding communities.
The Liveable Neighbourhood plans will eventually address all areas of the city in six tranches, with a focus on enhancing connectivity and local environments through community partnerships. The development of these plans also incorporates a feminist town planning approach, actively engaging young women and girls in design processes.
Early development of the Liveable Neighbourhoods initiative for tranches 1-3 has been supported by funding from Transport Scotland and Sustrans Scotland's Places for Everyone program. Due to recent changes in national funding structures, the council is now exploring enhanced collaboration across services, new delivery methods, and additional funding sources to move prospective projects towards construction.
The outcomes of the recent engagement for the Cardonald to Mosspark, Knightswood to Anniesland, Lambhill to Milton, and Ruchazie to Easterhouse areas, undertaken as part of tranche 3, were detailed in a paper presented to the Environment and Liveable Neighbourhoods Committee on June 10, 2025.
