Construction Begins On 127 Homes At Former Coatbridge School Site

Construction has officially commenced on a major new housing development in Coatbridge, set to deliver 127 new council homes.

The project, undertaken by CCG (Scotland) on the vacant ground of the former St. Columba High School in Whifflet, marks the 66th development in North Lanarkshire Council's new supply programme, which aims to provide 6,000 new homes by 2035.

The development will offer a diverse range of properties, including flats, semi-detached houses, and bungalows. Notably, 22 of these homes will be wheelchair-suitable, and a further 57 will be "amenity houses," designed to adapt over time to meet the evolving needs of tenants.

Built to the highest modern standards, the new homes will feature solar panels, electric vehicle (EV) charging points, and energy-efficient heating systems, aligning with contemporary sustainability goals.

A sod-cutting event was held to mark the start of construction, with Housing Convener, Councillor Michael McPake, cutting the first sod. He was joined by local councillors Andrew Bustard and Geraldine Woods, as well as representatives from North Lanarkshire Council and CCG.

Councillor McPake highlighted the broader benefits of the project: "In addition to delivering fantastic new housing for Coatbridge the development will bring benefits to the local community including local jobs, work experience placements and financial support for community projects. Built in the heart of the local community, the homes are close to local amenities and have excellent transport links. We’re continuing to make significant progress transforming communities and building new homes across North Lanarkshire which are meeting the needs of our tenants now and for generations to come.”

The total cost of the project is £26.8 million, with a significant contribution of £13.2 million from the Scottish Government. The development is anticipated to be completed by Autumn 2027.

David Wylie, Managing Director of CCG (Scotland), commented on the ongoing partnership: "Our site start at School Street marks another significant milestone in our long-standing partnership with North Lanarkshire Council – a collaboration that has, for over half a decade, helped transform communities and the lives of tenants across the region. The project is of great importance to Coatbridge, with 127 much-needed affordable homes not only helping to address local housing needs and demands, but also stimulating job creation and providing valuable training opportunities for young people."
