Network Rail is set to replace the railway bridge over East Kilbride Road at Busby station in March, investing £1.85 million to enhance the infrastructure.
The new bridge, a steel and reinforced concrete structure, will replace the existing steel bridge, providing increased strength and resilience, and reducing the risk of damage from high-sided vehicles.
The project will take place between Monday, March 17th, and Friday, March 28th, coinciding with the ongoing closure of the East Kilbride line to minimize disruption.
The A727 (East Kilbride Road) at Busby station will be subject to the following closures:
• March 17-21: Overnight closures from 23:00 to 06:00, with a contraflow system in place during the day.
• March 21-25: Full road closure.
• March 25-28: Overnight closures from 23:00 to 06:00, with a contraflow system in place during the day.
Clearly marked diversionary routes will be in place for motorists during the closures. The contraflow system will utilize temporary traffic lights, and drivers are advised to allow extra travel time.
With Busby station closed until 18th May, a bus replacement service is currently operational. During the bridge works (17-28 March), the last replacement bus to Busby will depart Glasgow Central station at 21:49 and East Kilbride station at 22:28. During the full road closure, a minibus will run between Busby and Clarkston, with an additional local minibus in Busby.
"We know there's never a great time to close a busy road, but replacing the bridge at Busby station alongside the current East Kilbride Enhancement project will avoid the need for a separate closure in the future," said Paul Reilly, Network Rail's senior programme manager. "By doing this, we'll complete the job faster and more efficiently. We thank our neighbours for their patience during the project."
The bridge replacement is part of the broader £140 million East Kilbride Enhancement project, which aims to electrify the line. Upon completion in December 2025, the East Kilbride line will be fully electrified, with new stations at East Kilbride and Hairmyres, and accessibility improvements at Clarkston and Giffnock.
