FLS Glen Prosen Restoration Project Yields Positive Results

Forestry and Land Scotland (FLS) has seen positive initial results from its river restoration efforts in Glen Prosen, according to research conducted by the Esk Rivers and Fisheries Trust (ERFT).

The research, commissioned by FLS to establish a baseline for future monitoring, found that while fish numbers were currently low, the overall condition of the river and its tributaries was generally good.

"This highlights and reinforces the importance and value of our river and burn restoration work in Glen Prosen," said Gareth Ventress, Environment Forester at FLS. "It will provide environmental benefits for fish in Glen Prosen and, by supporting larger populations of juvenile fish, potentially the wider River South Esk catchment."

The research identified a lack of nutrients and invertebrates as a key factor contributing to the low fish numbers.

"With a decrease in Atlantic salmon numbers in the River South Esk over the years, land management measures that improve fish habitat in Glen Prosen could play a key role in protecting and improving the wild salmon and sea trout populations further down river and across the catchment," said Dr Craig MacIntyre from the Esk Rivers and Fisheries Trust.

FLS has already implemented several measures to improve fish habitat, including the installation of 14km of fencing to exclude deer and rabbits from riverbanks, protecting young broadleaved trees.

The research also recommended planting or regenerating riparian broadleaved trees to provide shade and lower water temperatures, further enhancing fish habitat and supporting the growth of invertebrates.
