Transport Scotland has awarded a contract to WSP UK Limited to provide technical advisory services for the permanent repair of the M8 Woodside Viaducts in Glasgow.

This appointment marks a significant step towards the long-term repair of the vital motorway structures, which carry approximately 150,000 vehicles daily.

"Carrying 150,000 vehicles daily, the Woodside Viaducts are vital to both the local and trunk road networks, and I am pleased that this contract will take us a step closer to delivering a permanent solution," said Cabinet Secretary for Transport Fiona Hyslop.

Following the discovery of significant deterioration to the viaduct supports in 2021, temporary measures were implemented to ensure the safety of road users. These measures included temporary propping of the viaducts, which will remain in place while the permanent repair solution is designed and implemented.

"However, the long-term plan must be to maintain and invest in the trunk road network to ensure that this section of the M8 continues to serve the wide range of transport needs and the Scottish economy for many years to come," added Ms Hyslop.

WSP UK Limited will now be responsible for taking the initial design work forward for the permanent repair of the viaducts.

Transport Scotland thanked road users and local communities for their patience during the ongoing works to maintain the safety of the motorway.
