East Lothian's Planning Committee has granted planning permission for a new electricity substation at Branxton, south of Dunbar. The decision, made on November 5th, came despite significant local opposition, with 61 objections raised against the proposal.
Concerns were raised about the cumulative impact of renewable energy developments in the area, potential noise, dust, and light pollution, and the impact of construction traffic on local roads. However, the committee approved the application with additional conditions to mitigate these concerns, including enhanced biodiversity measures and regular community engagement.
In a separate decision, the committee deferred two applications from Bellway Homes for 103 new homes in Elphinstone and a connecting footpath. Local concerns regarding sewer network capacity, potential flooding, and the footpath's location led to the deferral. The council will continue to work with the developer to address these issues.
The committee also acknowledged the possibility of an appeal to the Scottish Government and delegated authority to the Chief Planning Officer to prepare a submission in such an event.
The relevant application numbers are: Branxton, 23/00616/PM, and Elphinstone, 24/00699/P and 23/01333/PM.
