New Play Area Unveiled in Motherwell

Construction News Image
A new play area which pays tribute to Motherwell's rich steelworks history has been opened on Roman Road.

The project was developed by North Lanarkshire Council's Community Partnership Team in partnership with local resident Joe Wemyss, pupils from Cathedral Primary and Muir Street Primary, and the Lanarkshire Deaf Club.

The play area was funded by £140,000 from the Local Development Programme and the Scottish Government.

The park's unique design incorporates imagery inspired by the steel industry into both the play equipment and ground surfaces, blending heritage with fun and activity.

It offers a range of exciting features, including a Steelworks multi-play unit, an accessible roundabout and trampoline, sign language boards and a variety of swings, including a basket swing and rollrunner. New picnic benches have also been installed.

Cathedral Primary School pupil, Cerys Lambert, cut the ribbon to officially open the play area after her creative design won the 'Design-a-Sign' competition, which now features proudly at the entrance to the park.

Councillor Geraldine Woods, Convener of Communities, said: "This fantastic new facility not only provides a safe, fun environment for our young people but also celebrates Motherwell's proud industrial heritage.

"Seeing the creativity and involvement from our local schools and community groups shows the strength of our community spirit."
