Scottish Water Announces North Ayrshire Network Upgrade Works

Construction News Image
Scottish Water has announced a £2 million programme of upgrade works for the water main network in North Ayrshire.

The publicly owned utility will begin installing nearly two miles of new pipework along the route of the A78 between Wemyss Bay and Skelmorlie on Tuesday 7 May 2024.

Using an open-cut method, the new water mains will increase resilience and improve the quality of supply to thousands of customers in the area.

Scottish Water's regional affairs manager in the west Georgina Reid said: "There have been major bursts in the area over recent years and it was clear investment was needed.

"This project will replace the old 6-inch cast-iron pipework and ensure our customers continue to enjoy great tasting water from a resilient and reliable water supply.

"We are investing more than ever before – up to a billion pounds a year – to meet the challenges of increasing demand and climate change.

"Our commitment is to our customers who own us, and we are dedicated to delivering the world class service they deserve and expect."

The new pipe will be installed along the route of the A78 from just south of Wemyss Bay towards Skelmorlie.

The rolling traffic management will see 250 metre sections reduced to one lane with vehicles allowed through using a convoy system between 8am and 5pm. Two-way temporary traffic lights will be used overnight.

Georgina added: "We have launched an advertising campaign to ensure residents and particularly road users from further afield are aware this work will be happening and can plan accordingly.

"We don't anticipate any major delays but would advise people to allow a little extra time."

Road closures will be required on Castle Road and Meigle Road towards the end of the works (November 2024 and February 2025) for approximately two weeks.

The project is being delivered by Scottish Water's alliance partner Caledonia Water Alliance and is expected to take 11 months to complete.
