Construction News Image
Aberdeen City Council has launched a new Climate and Nature Pledge, inviting local businesses, organisations and residents to make a commitment to playing their part in the city's journey to net zero, climate resilience, and nature restoration.

The pledge is free to sign and demonstrates a commitment to acting on climate and nature. Signatories will be given early access to Net Zero Aberdeen and Aberdeen Adapts news and events and provided with a media pack with materials to help promote the commitments they have made.

The pledge was announced at the Aberdeen Renewable Energy Group (AREG) Energy Futures Conference and Exhibition at P&J Live on Tuesday afternoon, following which it was signed by its first signatory, the Lord Provost of Aberdeen, Councillor Dr David Cameron. Early signatories also include Aberdeen Renewable Energy Group (AREG), North East Scotland Climate Action Network (NESCAN), North East Scotland Transport Partnership (NESTRANS), and Aberdeen Community Energy.

Also launched at the event was the Net Zero Aberdeen Routemap, which sets a pathway towards Aberdeen becoming net zero by 2045 and is accompanied by six key theme documents which outline the approach the plan will take, and Aberdeen Adapts, the associated approach for adapting to changes creating a more climate resilient Aberdeen.

Aberdeen City Council Lord Provost Dr David Cameron said: "The Net Zero Aberdeen Routemap, which sits alongside our Aberdeen Adapts framework, provides a strategic plan as we aim to meet the ambitious climate change targets set for the city and continued collaborative working will be key to seeing this through.

"We encourage everyone to sign-up to the Aberdeen Climate and Nature Pledge and to give deep thought to what real changes they can make both individually and collectively to help the city reach our ambitions.

"In the week of COP27, we are again seeing world leaders join together to discuss critical action to tackle the effects of climate change Aberdeen, as a global energy capital, has a vital part to play."

The Net Zero Aberdeen Routemap is a collaborative piece driven by the Net Zero Leadership and Delivery Unit which are formed of representatives of organisations based or working in Aberdeen. The routemap and key theme documents are available on the Net Zero Aberdeen web page.

Aberdeen Adapts is a framework for city-wide working on adaptation to changes to our climate. The framework incorporates the views of local organisations and communities, and sets the direction to build long term city climate resilience. The framework is available on the Aberdeen Adapts web page.
