East Dunbartonshire Council has unveiled a display of artwork from pupils of Mosshead Primary School representing the development of the new Allander Leisure and Day Care Centre.
The Council is redeveloping the Bearsden site as part of a £42.5 million investment - including a new, state-of-the-art sports and leisure complex, as well as a support centre for adults with learning disabilities.
The site contractors, McLaughlin & Harvey, in partnership with architects, Holmes Miller, sent a short video to Mosshead Primary School which explained the design of the new centre and the job role of an architect. They also sent a design brief to pupils for them to create their own visions of how the new facility should look.
Forty of the imaginative designs have now been selected for display on the site hoardings, and Joint Council Leaders, Andrew Polson and Vaughan Moody were tasked with selecting three winning entries. Freya in P6 submitted the winning design, George in P2 came second and Reuben in P4, third. The three winners all received a £30 WHSmith voucher and all entrants were presented with a certificate for taking part.
Joint Council Leader, Councillor Andrew Polson, said: "The pupils at Mosshead Primary school are an extremely talented bunch, it was a very tough job selecting the winners as all the entries were so well thought out and beautifully presented. However, in the end we decided that Freya's design was the winner, her drawing was meticulous and her entry was so colourful and vibrant. Congratulations to the three winners and to all the pupils who submitted an entry, they were all absolutely fantastic."
Joint Council Leader, Councillor Vaughan Moody, added: "It is great to see the new Allander Leisure and Day Care Centre beginning to shape and it looks even more appealing now as the site is surrounded with so many brilliant designs. The competition was a great idea to develop local children's interest in architecture and design and to get them thinking about the activities they will be able to participate in when the new centre opens later next year."
Danny Mathieson, Operations Director at McLaughlin & Harvey said: "The designs created by the pupils of Mosshead Primary School have certainly brightened up our hoardings, especially as we approach the darker winter months. All of the entries were excellent, and we would like to thank everyone who took part."
