Union Terrace Gardens 'Meet The Buyer' Event Held

Construction News Image
Aberdeen City Council and Balfour Beatty have hosted a 'Meet the Buyer' event for firms poised to benefit from sub-contracting opportunities during the transformation of Union Terrace Gardens (UTG).

More than 70 companies registered for the event, held on Tuesday 24 September at the Town House in Aberdeen.

Construction group Balfour Beatty has been appointed by the Council to carry out the £25.7 million build.

The flagship Aberdeen City Centre Masterplan project will see the Victorian park transformed into an inclusive 21st century space by improving access, amenities and activity while enhancing heritage features.

Meet the Buyer events bring businesses together with contracting organisations to share information about upcoming tendering opportunities and their procurement processes.

Balfour Beatty's Regional Head of Procurement for Scotland, Jim Brannan, said: "I was very encouraged by the turn-out.

"Union Terrace Gardens is an iconic project and local suppliers want to get involved because it will provide a legacy for generations to come and significant economic and social value.

"They were very well informed about the high consistent standards demanded by Balfour Beatty in terms of safety, quality and delivery – and also in developing their own young workforce through apprenticeships and training."

The UTG design includes three pavilions (on Union Street, Union Terrace and Rosemount Viaduct), elevated walkways, landscaping and lighting, and the refurbishment of the Union Terrace arches.

Work is already underway and is expected to be completed in summer 2021.
