Scottish Water workers have discovered 30 industrial size bread baskets in a sewer in Cardonald, Glasgow.

The unexpected find happened last week after employees opened up a sewer manhole cover in Cemetery Street to investigate flooding at a nearby cemetery.

Almost 100 sewer blockages per day occur across Scotland, with around 80% of incidents caused by people putting the wrong things down their sinks and toilets.

Scottish Water Network Maintenance Operative, Andrew Szolowski, slammed those responsible for throwing the baskets down the sewer.

"Why anyone would think it was a good idea to throw these baskets down a sewer is beyond me - it's not clever and it could have caused serious problems with flooding," he said.

"It took us around three hours to pull the baskets free,  time which would have been much better spent elsewhere had the individual (or individuals) responsible thought about the consequences of their actions and not done this."
