Plans have been approved for the first phase of a new £18.6 million primary school project in East Lothian.

The new Wallyford Primary School will be built by Morrison Construction as part of the new St Clements Wells development.

The facility will replace the existing school building at Salters Road and will include 28 classrooms, as well as 120 pre-school places. Further plans include expanding the site's space for an eventual primary and pre-school roll of more than 1,300 places.

Richard Park, Hub South East's Operations Director said: "The new Wallyford Primary is a huge investment in education by East Lothian Council so It's fantastic to reach the key milestone of planning approval, meaning we can now work with our partners in the Council to focus on making these plans a reality.

"Our contractor, Morrison Construction, should start work on site in the summer, and in Autumn next year, pupils and staff will have a new modern, fit-for-purpose learning environment, whilst local residents will be able to enjoy new community facilities such as a games hall and library."

Fiona Robertson, Head of Education at East Lothian Council, said: "A new school and facilities will not only provide the best learning environment possible for local children, but it will also benefit all members of the local community."

The school is scheduled for completion by autumn 2018.
