Scottish Water has started work on a £7.1 million river environmental improvement project in Barrhead, East Renfrewshire.

The scheme aims to improve the river water quality in the Levern Water, which flows into the White Cart Water and the River Clyde.

Features include installing new waste water infrastructure as well as a 425-metre stretch of new sewer near the river at Bowerwalls Business Park. In addition, a new underground tank will be installed, providing 5000 cubic metres of extra capacity, and a Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO), which will provide screening.

The project will be carried out by contractors amey Black & Veatch (aBV) and will take around 10 months to complete.

Once finished, it'll allow Scottish Water to meet various environmental regulations, including Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive, as well as benefitting aquatic life.

Joanna Peebles, Scottish Water's regional communities team manager, said: "Scottish Water is delighted to have started this important project in Barrhead.

"The investment will significantly improve the environment on the Levern Water and we are sure local people will welcome this. The project will be able to progress without any significant disruption to the local community."
