First US Shale Gas Shipment Arrives In Scotland

The first shipment of US shale gas has been delivered in Scotland.

A tanker carrying 27,500m3 of ethane gas arrived at Grangemouth on Tuesday, 27 September.

The vessel is owned by petrochemicals company Ineos. The £150 million project is supported by a £9 million RSA grant from Scottish Enterprise, which stated would help safeguard or create over 400 jobs.

The organisation's Managing Director of growth companies, innovation & infrastructure, Adrian Gillespie, said: "Today is a landmark day for INEOS as it welcomes its first shipment of shale gas to Grangemouth, and a great example of innovation and dynamism in the chemical sciences sector in Scotland.

"An important contributor to the Scottish economy, we've been working intensively with INEOS since 2013 when the company cemented its commitment to Scotland in a £450 million investment plan. This significant investment by INEOS is expected to strengthen Grangemouth's position as a leading global chemical bio-sciences manufacturing hub."
