East Dunbartonshire Council is calling for a local public inquiry to be held over plans to build a new housing development in the region.

Proposals by Hallam Land Management to build 140 new homes on greenbelt land near Torrance were rejected by the council's planning board in December 2015.

Planning Officers said developing the scheme on grazing fields at Tower Farm was contrary to the Council's Local Plan as well as Scottish Planning Policy.

The Scottish Government has since 'called in' an appeal made by the developers and the date of the inquiry is set to be made next month.

Cllr Billy Hendry said it is "imperative" that any inquiry is held at a local level which suits residents.

"The Board agreed at the meeting on 15 December 2015 that a Planning Inquiry should be held if this issue was appealed," he said.

"The Planning Board made the right choice for the right reasons - it took account of planning guidance including representations made by local residents, with concerns about road safety, draining and flooding, and public transport.

"More than 170 local people felt strongly enough to object to the application and they deserve to be considered as part of the decision-making process."
