Future Development Of South Cumbernauld Framework Agreed

Construction News Image
A framework for the future development of South Cumbernauld has been agreed by the council's Planning and Transportation Committee.

The Finalised Strategic Development Framework for South Cumbernauld Community Growth Area (CGA) sets out how the area could be developed over the next ten years with housing, community facilities and infrastructure.

Any planning applications from developers for the two sites within the CGA - Palacerigg and Mid Forest - will now be assessed in line with the principles of the Framework, which has been adopted as supplementary planning guidance.

Councillor James Coyle, Convener of the Planning and Transportation Committee, said: "South Cumbernauld was identified in 2006 as a potential location for up to 2,000 new homes and community facilities by 2025 to meet local demand.

"We want to make sure that any development of that scale is designed and delivered effectively, with the necessary infrastructure, like schools, transport and shops, in place."

A public consultation was carried out in two phases; January/February and then March to May 2016. Issues raised during the consultation included: education provision; capacity of the road network; requirement for more affordable housing to allow young people to live locally; visual impact of future developments on existing residents; and the use of local underpasses.
