Aberdeenshire Councillors have approved a report to progress work on a sports centre project in the region.
Members of the policy and resources committee have now recommended a detailed planning application to be submitted for the Banchory sports facility scheme.
Features of the proposed centre include a six-lane swimming pool with training pool, suitable as a competitive regional facility, along with a sports hall, training pool, squash courts and a fitness room, including changing and café areas.
Flexible spaces will also be incorporated in the centres design. Proposals are being explored to heat the facility using a nearby biomass centre, while sustainable features including solar panels will also be utilised.
It is estimated the project will cost around £8.5 million, with funding to be contributed from capital funds, the council revenue budget and £700,000 from the surrounding community.
Cllr Martin Kitts-Hayes said: "This facility will, when operations, make a significant difference to the community. The facility has been designed to be flexible, accessible and inclusive and the committee was unanimous in its support for this vital piece of local infrastructure."
