Engineering company Fugro has completed offshore works in preparation for construction of the European Offshore Wind Deployment Centre (EOWDC) in Scotland.
The company carried out geotechnical site investigation works at 11 turbine locations to assess the seabed ahead of the project in Aberdeen Bay.
Fugro's 78-metre geotechnical drilling vessel, the Bucentaur, was utilised for the investigatory work on behalf of Aberdeen Offshore Wind Farm Limited (AOWFL).
Recognised as a vital investment in Scotland's renewables infrastructure, the EOWDC aims to establish a hub of offshore wind know-how, technology and innovation.
Dennis van den Bulk, Fugro’s Senior Project Manager, said: "A two phased approach was adopted over a period of 11 days. During the first phase we conducted seabed CPTs and seismic CPTs down to refusal at each of the turbine locations, and in the second phase we drilled three boreholes.
"The offshore phase was completed safely, successfully and without any significant downtime, validating the solution."
Andy Paine, project director for AOWFL, added: "The pioneering EOWDC will help establish the north east of Scotland as a global centre of innovation for the offshore wind industry."
The partners behind AOWFL are Vattenfall and Aberdeen Renewable Energy Group (AREG).
