Plans to construct a food waste transfer station in Dundee are to be discussed by Councillors next week.

Dundee City Council's Environment Committee will hear about the facility that has been proposed for Marchbanks. The station is understood to be needed for bulk loading food waste from across the city, before it is sent for specialist treatment, and comes after plans were approved earlier this year to increase Dundee's domestic recycling services.

The cost of the project would be £32,215.

Councillor Craig Melville, Environment Convener, is quoted as saying: "This alteration at Marchbanks is vital for our plans to change the way Dundee recycles. Ongoing food waste trials across the city have been extremely successful and I am proud of the long record of recycling that people in Dundee have supported.

"We are now facing new challenges and the dates for meeting the targets are getting ever closer. I take the city's recycling responsibilities very seriously and our proposals represent a sensible way forward.

"This transfer station will allow us to roll out food waste recycling across Dundee as part of our drive to improve services and increase the city's recycling rate."
