Dumfries and Galloway Council have adopted a Local Development Plan (LDP) for the area.

The LDP provides a framework for promoting development, and will also be used to help determine planning applications.

Included in the report are plans to provide new development sites with opportunities to build more than 7,000 new houses and provide a range of business and industry sites to meet the needs of economy. There is also a framework to ensure new development in towns, villages and rural areas.

Councillor Colin Smyth, Chairman of Economy, Environment and Infrastructure Committee, said: "Building the local economy is the number one priority of our Council, so I welcome the fact the new local development plan has now been adopted.

"It will provide clear guidance to developers and help to deliver new developments that meet the needs of the region in the 21 century. It will also provide a boost to construction industry and assist our region's economic recovery."
