Inverclyde Council has issued a statement confirming a return to two-way traffic on Nelson Street in Greenock.

The change comes following the completion of repair and strengthening work that had been carried out to a bridge in the area.

From tomorrow (19 September), the priorities on Nelson Street – at its junction with Princes Street – will change, as will the junction at Hastie Street and Princes Street.

New signs and road markings are already in place for the changeover.

One of the main changes now is that motorists must give way to Princes Street where they have not had to before, and the local authority has urged drivers to bear this in mind.

Alan Puckrin, Acting Corporate Director Alan Puckrin, commented: "Nelson Street was turned one way a few years ago after the bridge over the railway line close to West Station on Inverkip Street was found to be weak.

"The one-way system was introduced to reduce the volume of traffic passing over the bridge. It has now been strengthened and we have now been able to fulfil requests from local residents to return Nelson Street to two-way traffic."
